At Country Living Nursery & Florals, we are committed to supporting other British Columbia growers whenever we need to source plants from outside our farm. All of the plants we currently purchase are sourced from BC nurseries. One of our primary growing partners is Devan Nursery in Abbotsford, whose plants help us offer a broader selection while we continue to develop our own growing capacity. As a growing nursery, we recognize that purchasing established plant starts allows us to provide our customers with a greater variety of plants while we learn more about the needs, preferences, and growing conditions of our local community. Our long-term goal, however, is to grow more of our own plants and rely less on purchased plant starts. As our nursery expands and we better understand what our community is looking for, we plan to gradually increase the number and variety of plants we start ourselves from seed in our own growing environment. Our goal is to eventually have at least 50% of our plant starts grown from seed here on our farm, with the intention of continuing to increase that percentage as our knowledge, infrastructure, and growing capacity develop. We believe this approach allows us to grow responsibly and intentionally—supporting BC growers today while working toward growing more of what our community needs right here at home.Grown in BC. Growing more here at home. 🌱
At Country Living Nursery & Florals, we believe that where we source our seed matters. Whenever possible, we make bulk seed purchases from small Canadian farms and seed suppliers, helping us support other Canadian growers while keeping more of our purchasing dollars close to home.Unlike live plants, seed can be transported between provinces without compromising the quality of the finished plant or flower. This allows us to source from growers and suppliers across Canada while still producing the same high-quality plants here on our farm.We also make minimal seed purchases from outside Canada whenever suitable Canadian options are available. When we do need to source internationally, we make those choices thoughtfully, based on availability, variety, quality, and growing suitability. Our Goal: Favouring Non-GMO SeedAs we continue to grow, one of our goals is to favour non-GMO seed whenever suitable varieties are available. We believe in being thoughtful about what we put into the soil and ultimately into the plants we grow.We are a small farm, and our seed sources and available varieties can change from year to year. While we may not always be able to source every variety from a Canadian or non-GMO supplier, we are committed to making intentional choices and increasing the proportion of Canadian-sourced and non-GMO seed we use over time. For us, growing locally is about more than where our plants are sold. It is about building relationships with other Canadian growers, making responsible purchasing decisions, and being good stewards of the land entrusted to us.Grown here. Sourced thoughtfully. Supporting Canadian growers. 🌱
At Country Living Nursery & Florals, we believe that growing beautiful plants should also mean being thoughtful about the impact our growing practices have on the environment.Plastic is a significant part of modern agriculture and horticulture. In Canada alone, nearly 62,000 tonnes of plastic were used in primary agriculture in 2021, including materials used for greenhouse production, irrigation, crop covers, containers, and other growing needs. As a small nursery, we recognize that we have an opportunity to make thoughtful choices about the materials we use. Our goal is to use as little plastic as reasonably possible throughout our nursery operation. For our fibre pots and containers, we have chosen to work with CY Growers, a British Columbia company that supplies horticultural products to growers across the province. CY Growers supplies Western Pulp Products' moulded-fibre nursery containers, among other horticultural products.Although the Western Pulp fibre pots we purchase are manufactured in Corvallis, Oregon, we believe supporting this product is a worthwhile environmental choice. Western Pulp has manufactured moulded-fibre products since 1958, and states that its moulded-fibre products are made from recycled paper and are designed to divert waste fibre from landfills or incineration and provide alternatives to products that are not biodegradable. Many of their nursery containers are also designed to be planted directly into the ground, reducing the need to remove and dispose of a conventional plastic pot at planting time.We know that no single choice makes a nursery completely sustainable, and we are not claiming that our operation is plastic-free. Rather, we are committed to making better choices wherever we reasonably can—reducing unnecessary plastic, choosing fibre-based alternatives where they make sense, and continually looking for ways to improve how we grow. For us, caring for the land is part of being a good steward of the place we call home.Grow thoughtfully. Grow locally. Leave a lighter footprint. 🌿
